Boston hood cleaning

Keeping Boston kitchens safe, clean and up to code

Boston is one of our two core service areas. For restaurants and commercial kitchens across the city, we clean the entire exhaust system — hood, filters, ductwork and rooftop fan — down to bare metal, the standard NFPA 96 requires.

Grease that builds up inside a kitchen exhaust system is one of the most common causes of restaurant fires. Regular cleaning keeps that fuel out of your ductwork, keeps your fire inspector satisfied and keeps your insurance company happy.

Know the rules

Hood cleaning rules for Boston restaurants

Boston and Massachusetts have some of the strictest kitchen exhaust rules in the country. Here’s what applies to your kitchen — and what we handle for you.

Certified cleaners only

Massachusetts requires anyone who cleans and inspects commercial kitchen exhaust systems to hold a certificate of competency from the State Fire Marshal. Boston’s Fire Prevention Division also requires exhaust cleaners to register with the city every year.

Service stickers

After each cleaning, a service label goes on your hood. The state fire code sets what the label shows and where it’s placed, so inspectors can see at a glance when your system was last cleaned.

Deficiency notices

If a system can’t be brought up to code, the certified cleaner must notify the local fire department within 48 hours and give the owner a copy. We’ll always walk you through any problem we find before it gets to that point.

Records kept for 3 years

Inspection and cleaning records have to be kept for at least three years. Our photo reports give you a clear record of every visit.

Kitchen typeRequired cleaning
Solid fuel (wood, charcoal)Monthly
High volume — 24-hour, charbroiling, wokQuarterly
Moderate volume — most restaurantsTwice a year
Low volume — churches, camps, senior centersOnce a year

What we see on the roof and under the hood

These are photos our crews took on the job — not stock pictures. Grease builds up in places most kitchen staff never see, like the seams of the hood and the blades of the rooftop fan. That’s exactly what we clean.

Questions

Boston hood cleaning FAQ

How often does a Boston restaurant need its hood cleaned?

Massachusetts sets the schedule by how much you cook: monthly for solid-fuel cooking (wood or charcoal), quarterly for high-volume kitchens such as 24-hour, charbroiling or wok cooking, twice a year for moderate volume, and once a year for low-volume kitchens like churches, camps and senior centers. We offer all four schedules and will tell you which one your kitchen falls under.

Do you clean at night so we don’t have to close?

Yes. Our crews clean after you close, so your kitchen is clean and ready for the next service without losing a shift.

What do I get after the cleaning?

A service sticker on your hood showing the date, and a photo report of your system before and after cleaning — the paperwork your fire inspector, insurance company and landlord want to see.

What does a hood cleaning cost in Boston?

It depends on the size of your system, how many hoods and fans you have and how often it’s cleaned. Quotes are free — fill out the form or call (888) 410-4650 and we’ll give you a clear price with no surprises.
